El aspirante presidencial Abel Martínez juramentó a los responsables de su proyecto político en varios sectores de Nueva York, como parte de sus esfuerzos para procurar nuevamente la candidatura del Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) para las elecciones de 2028.
La actividad fue realizada en el 809 Lounge, ubicado en el Alto Manhattan, Nueva York. Los organizadores afirmaron que el encuentro reunió a más de 400 personas y que alrededor de un centenar no pudo ingresar al segundo nivel del establecimiento por falta de espacio. La asistencia no pudo ser verificada de manera independiente.
A través de una nota de prensa, el equipo de Abel Martínez informó que durante el acto el dirigente político centró su discurso en la importancia económica y electoral de los dominicanos residentes en el extranjero.
Martínez cuestionó las dificultades que, a su juicio, enfrentan los dominicanos en el exterior para gestionar documentos en los consulados o impulsar inversiones en la República Dominicana.
"Muchos políticos solo toman en cuenta a la diáspora como maquinaria electoral para generar votos", afirmó el exalcalde de Santiago.
El exalcalde de Santiago sostuvo que los dominicanos en el exterior deberían recibir asesoría legal y facilidades estatales para desarrollar emprendimientos en el país.
También aseguró que procuraría crear condiciones para que los emigrantes puedan invertir o retornar al país con garantías de seguridad y acceso a servicios públicos de calidad.
"Ustedes no tienen que mendigar en el consulado el apoyo legal para sus planes. Eso debería ser una facilidad inmediata", expresó.
Peso de la diáspora
La quinta edición del Registro Sociodemográfico de los Dominicanos Residentes en el Exterior, presentada en julio por el Instituto de Dominicanos y Dominicanas en el Exterior (Index), estima que 3,030,647 dominicanos viven en 129 países y territorios y siendo América del Norte la que concentra el 84.9 % de esa población.
Además, la República Dominicana recibió US$6,219.3 millones en remesas durante el primer semestre de 2026, un incremento interanual de 6.7 %, según datos del Banco Central.
Para las elecciones de 2024, el padrón del exterior estuvo integrado por 863,785 electores, una cantidad que, tratada como una sola demarcación, solo era superada por la provincia Santo Domingo. De ese total, 613,340 votantes estaban registrados en Estados Unidos.
Equipo juramentado
Durante la actividad, Martínez designó a Pablo López como coordinador general de su proyecto en el exterior y a Rafael Payano como subcoordinador.
También juramentó a Caonabo Burgos en Manhattan; Lenit Estrella en el Bronx; Jeudi Martínez en Queens; Carlos Gómez en Brooklyn; Marian Delgado en la coordinación operativa, y Radhamés Toribio en el área de juventud.
